Named Veterinary Surgeon
Cambridge, East Anglia

Our Client is looking for a veterinary surgeon to join their team at their site in Cambridgeshire.

The Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) is responsible for, monitoring and providing advice on the health, welfare and treatment of animals and should help the establishment licence holder (PELH) to fulfil his/her responsibilities. You should be familiar with the husbandry, biology, physiology and clinical issues relevant to the species for which you are responsible for. You should be aware of the local structure for management and responsibilities relating to animal use at your establishment, including how key roles and tasks are fulfilled. For someone with the right capacity, seniority and experience the client has expressed the capacity for a wider role. This would involve multi-site and multinational responsibility. They are open to discussions with more senior NVS candidates as the scope and potential is there.

Responsibilities:

  • Be familiar with the main provisions of ASPA
  • Operate a programme of veterinary care and health monitoring
  • Be actively involved, on a day-to-day basis, in safeguarding the welfare of the protected animals at the establishment
  • Monitor the health and welfare of the animals under your care by regularly visiting all parts of your establishment specified in the establishment licence, ensuring veterinary reports are completed for each animal seen
  • Ensure that adequate veterinary cover and services are available at all times at your establishment and that those caring for animals have your contact details and those of a suitably qualified deputy, in case of an emergency
  • Performance of pre-shipment health checks of groups of animals to be shipped. Authorise / stamp TRACES documents for exports
  • Ensuring routine breeder health checks are completed
  • Advise on biosecurity issues and be able to advise on quarantine requirements and health screening
  • Provide veterinary advice and treatment, where needed and when requested by a personal licence holder to key staff
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the husbandry, housing and welfare needs of the animals kept at your establishment, including the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease and the impact of housing and husbandry systems on the welfare and needs of an animal
  • Comply with the requirements of the Veterinary Medicines Regulations relating to the supply and use of controlled drugs, prescription-only medication and other therapeutic substances used on animals
  • Undertake prearranged (non-urgent) and emergency surgeries
  • Performance of NVS audit of facility
  • Be an active member of, and play a central role in, the AWERB meetings
  • Delegation of certain duties to competent animal care staff via a clearly defined first aid treatment protocol.

  • Naturally conscientious, trustworthy, accurate and with attention to detail
  • The ability to communicate effectively verbally
  • For someone with the right capacity, seniority and experience the client has expressed the capacity for a wider role involving multi-site and multi-national responsibility.

Requirements:

  • Be a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)
  • Attended an NVS training course provided by RCVS-approved provider (or attend a suitable course within one year of NVS appointment)
  • Language and Literacy: must be able to understand both verbal and written work instructions
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work within set timescales
  • Naturally conscientious, trustworthy, accurate and with attention to detail
  • The ability to communicate effectively verbally
