Here at S3 Science, we are looking for Principal Animal Technician, to join our client situated in London, to provide research support and maintenance for the research projects conducted within this Biological Research Facility.

The Role

The successful applicant will be responsible for the supervision of a specialist team of technicians, research staff and also including visitors who have been authorized by the management to access the facility. You will also have direct communications with external research customers, suppliers and various other organisations, as approved by the facility management, acting as a direct point of contact.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for routine husbandry and associated tasks in the facility (cleaning of animal cages and provision of food and water) to include the specialized housing conditions such as:
    • Specified pathogen free unit (Barrier Maintained Unit)
    • Farm animal Units
    • ACDP Category 3 biocontainment facilities
    • Germ Free isolators
    • Other Flexible Film isolator areas and quarantine facilities
    • Health monitoring
    • Transgenic breeding/maintenance
    • Stock management
  • Manage on-going rodent breeding programs and maintaining accurate records
  • Involved with re-derivation and health screening programmes as required
  • Maintain accurate written/computer records with particular reference to the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, in house re-charging records and animal breeding data at more advanced levels than
  • With appropriate Home Office (PIL) Licence permissions, confident and able to display a wide range of authorized ‘Regulated Procedures’ as requested by Management (in particular with rodents), and maintain accurate contemporaneous records
  • Supervision and training of staff including assisting with Personal reviews

Role Requirements

The successful applicant will have the following skills and experience, as detailed below:

  • Experience supervising a team of technicians within an Animal Unit
  • Qualification in Animal Technology to MIAT/Level 4 or equivalent
  • Have a Personal license under the ASPA 1986
  • Be an accredited trainer and assessor of staff
  • Knowledge and skills of breeding techniques, anaesthesia, euthanasia, etc.

Salary: 26,000 - £34,000
