Senior Animal Technician – Large animals
Cambridge, East Anglia

Our Client is looking for a senior animal technician with Large animals. The role is important in providing animal care and technical support to the busy and productive research programme within a modern biomedical facility – working with large and farm based animals.

The role holder shall provide day-to-day supervision of, and work as part of a team of technical staff in order to provide quality animal care. The role holder will liaise with researchers and co-ordinate the team, so that sufficient staff are available to provide care with appropriate expertise, in order to meet the requirements of the researchers and needs of the animals. The role holder will also provide training for new technical staff and researchers as required.

You will support the research staff by performing regulated scientific procedures essential to (often requiring a personal home office licence) and providing asepsis support to researchers performing surgery as well as assisting with non-regulated procedures as required.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To be responsible for the overall daily supervision of a team of technicians grades 2 & 3. Providing day-to-day supervision including support and motivation of the team, and assisting the NACWO with performance management monitoring and training as required.
  • Allocation of work and rotas to junior staff members including weekends and holidays, to maintain a high standard of both animal husbandry and general housekeeping.
  • Assist the NACWO with training of all new facility users including induction, covering all aspects of animal health, husbandry, care and welfare as well as record keeping, Home Office guidelines and Health and Safety.
  • Ensure a high standard by the correct observance of facility Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and assist in training / implementation of new working practices as required.
  • Undertaking Home Office licensed procedures required for research on protected animals as set out in the Home Office personal license and assisting with procedures & surgery as necessary including assisting the NVS with a variety of tasks.
  • Training new staff in licensed techniques prior to HO training.

  • Care of experimental animals.
  • Maintaining detailed records of all animals, stock levels and procedures to a high standard of accuracy.
  • Responsible for routine monitoring and maintenance of procedural, surgical and animal life support equipment, general supplies, cleanliness and tidiness of procedure and surgical rooms. Checking, cleaning and changing of filters, checking the function of alarms.

Education and qualifications

  • Institute of Animal Technology Certificate or Membership Diploma / BTEC Certificate (desirable).
  • GCSE (Grades A-C) in English, Mathematics and a Science subject
  • Home Office Licence, Modules A – B, and holder of a Home Office Personal Licence. (Essential, Home Office Module C desirable)

Relevant experience

  • Extensive experience working in a designated establishment with large animals (desirable).
  • Experience carrying out various regulated procedures and surgical techniques.
  • Supervisory experience of animal techniques and staff management & training.
  • Experience dealing with large / farm animals
