Senior Animal Technician
S3 Science has an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Animal Technician to join our client’s facility in the internationally recognised academic school of Life Sciences. Coming in the top 10 in the REF 2014 rankings, The School of Life Sciences is at the forefront of research in the Biological Sciences in the UK.

The role
As a Senior Animal Technician, you would be responsible for overseeing and advising on experimental management of the Facility for different scientific groups at the University, assessing and advising on project plans, helping to establish, implement and train in experimental best practice in scientific techniques.
Main Responsibilities:
 Cleaning, feeding and watering of animals, cage side assessments and daily health checks.
 Cleaning, feeding of fish, tank side assessments and daily health checks
 Maintain meticulous unit records of animal / fish breeding programmes, methods, sample details within specific research project(s), etc.
 Maintenance of breeding colonies, setting up breeding pairs, sexing and weaning animals and monitoring pregnancies
 Specialist cleaning and preparation activities including preparation of racking, preparation of caging/bottles/materials, use of cage washer, autoclaves and steriliser
 Assist with the provision of an effective and efficient technical service for all users of the facility
 To contribute to the Unit Quality Assurance system by assisting with the drafting of working documents, including Standard Operating Procedures, and basic Risk and COSHH assessments
 Operation and basic maintenance, adjustment and repair of specialist apparatus, equipment and instruments within the laboratories/ theatre under the direction of the AU Manager or nominee
 Instruct, train and provide guidance and supervision to other technical staff and students in the techniques and operation of the Animals (Scientific procedures) Act 1986 (as amended) 2012

What Experience and Qualifications do I need?
To apply for the role of Deputy Facility manager, you will need to have the following experience and qualifications:
 Relevant experience showing full working knowledge and proficiency in an animal unit technician role
 Proven hands-on experience of working within a small animal (predominately rodent) facility
 Proven hands-on experience of working within a theatre/surgical room environment
 Proven experience in the operation of the Animals Scientific Procedures Act 1986 and best practice in animal welfare
 Hold a current, home office license
