Senior Mechanical Engineer Technician

Here at S3 Science, we are currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Engineer Technician, to work within our client’s prestigious Mechanical Engineering department in London. This is a full time permanent opportunity, offering a competitive salary.

The Role

The main duties of the post holder will be to support the needs of the department with student projects and research by manufacturing items, such as experimental rigs and individual projects and help with their installation. The post holder would also be able to maintain our laboratories with items such as combustion engines, wave simulation tanks and bespoke equipment by repairing faulty equipment and manufacturing components.

Brief Summary of Responsibilities:

  • To help maintain a technical staff presence in the workshop between the hours of 8.30 am and 5.00 pm
  • To discuss all aspects of design and construction of projects with academic, technical, research staff and students as appropriate
  • To instruct research workers and students on good mechanical practice re. safety and operation of experimental equipment, including the use of tools in the workplace
  • To work in a clean and safe manner ensuring equipment and areas are cleaned after use.
  • To maintain machines and equipment in the workshop and laboratories so that production, lectures and research can be undertaken and advise if a problem requires specialist maintenance and to keep a maintenance record on the workshop inventory
  • To help maintain stock and materials by identifying low stock levels and suppliers
  • To set up teaching experiments when required and maintain and store the equipment when not in use
  • To help the department workshop and laboratories perform in line with UCL safety policies by maintaining enough safety representatives and specialist duties such as fire evacuation marshals, first aiders, fork lift truck drivers, safe use of abrasive wheels etc. with the other technicians in the team

Person Specification

  • The post holder must have HNC or equivalent skills and knowledge in Mechanical Engineering, which enables them to advise fellow staff, researchers and students on technical issues regarding concept, design, drawing, manufacture, assembly and installation of mechanical engineering devices and systems
  • Must have a good knowledge of engineering materials and their use
  • Must be able to read engineering drawings and work from sketches and verbal instructions and must have a good understanding of workshop principles
  • Must have worked within a workshop environment with responsibility for assembly of complex devices and the development of innovative designs

Salary: 35,000 - £43,000
