New Zebrafish Models Could Reduce Number of Mice Used in Research

A new methodology to transplant human haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) into zebrafish could replace the mouse models currently used.

Researchers from the University of Sheffield developed a new procedure that allowed the transplantation of human HSCs into zebrafish, before adaptive immunity happened.

Human HSCs were purified by enrichment of the CD34 cell population using positive magnetic selection and a pure population was sorted using an anti-CD34 antibody by flow cytometry.

The cells were then successfully transplanted into the bloodstream of zebrafish larvae.

Zebrafish offer numerous advantages over murine models in this case.
