An exciting new opportunity to join our clients as a Biochemical Engineer. As Biochemical Engineer in the Bioprocessing team, you will be tasked with developing the manufacturing process to produce tissue on a large scale.
Your duties will include:
- Design, set up and operate end-to-end bioprocess at the bench-scale to enable efficient expansion, differentiation, and harvest of mammalian cell cultures
- Develop process and implement enabling technologies that facilitate enhanced volumetric productivity
- Design, plan, and execute R&D experiments that optimise unit operations and develop the over-arching bioprocess (from raw materials to final product), ensuring that deliverables are successfully met within the timeline
- Analyse, summarise, record, and communicate experimental results.
- Supervise and mentor junior engineers and scientists
- Document research findings clearly in an electronic lab book
- Along with team members, provide routine laboratory maintenance, including participating in equipment upkeep, cleaning rotas and laboratory consumables stock management
- Ensure that laboratory and workshop health, safety and quality procedures are followed
- Select, follow, and adapt experimental protocols and generate laboratory SOPs
- Support the preparation of laboratory risk assessments and maintenance of health and safety protocols
- Participate regularly in group meetings and prepare and deliver presentations to the project team and internal stakeholders
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related field.
Essential Experience:
- BSc with 6 or more years experience or PhD with 2 or more years experience in bioprocess development in an industrial or academic setting
- Experience in designing, developing, and operating bioreactors up to 20L
- Supervising junior engineers and scientists
- Experience with downstream bioprocess technologies (e.g., filtration, centrifugation)
- Substantial experience in aseptic cell culture, ideally with stem cells
Desirable experience:
- Experience with adherent cell cultures is highly desirable
- Experience with statistical software and DoE (design of experiments)
- Line-management experience
- Appreciation of Quality by Design principles
- Ability to develop mechanical designs, PFD, P&IDs, HAZOP and SOPs
- Experience with CAD (e.g., Autodesk) and CFD (e.g., Ansys Fluent) software packages
- The ability to use a programming language (e.g., MATLAB, R) would be a bonus
