Chief Animal Technicians
Cambridge, East Anglia

We are looking for Chief Animal Technicians, to join our client’s Germ-Free area of their Biological Sciences Unit.

The successful Chief Animal Technicians will be based within the Germ-Free area and will be responsible for the daily coordination of the area of the facility; managing breeding and experimental stocks for animals housed within isolators and iso-cages as part of a Germ-Free environment.

The successful Chief Animal Technician will support the Biosciences Manager / NACWO with the day-to-day running of the Germ-Free area. This includes supervisory responsibility over a team of technicians covering staff coordination, support and training, as well as overseeing animal caging and stock levels, relaying this back to researchers.

Further job details are below:

  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of animals housed in isolators and iso-cages within the Germ-Free facility and assist animal husbandry schedules
  • Maintain and establish complex breeding strategies in liaison with researchers, keenly observe animal behaviour and phenotypes as this may have an effect on research
  • Undertake Home Office Licensed procedures e.g. ear biopsies of transgenic lines, blood and tissue sampling, administration of substances).
  • Organise and supervise staff within the Germ Free area, maintain records so that research groups are charged appropriately

What experience and qualifications do I need?

  • Extensive experience working in a designated establishment with laboratory animal (work with IVC’s / GA animals / species specifics)
  • Experience carrying out Home Office licensed procedures
  • Hold a current Home Office personal licence modules A-C
  • IAT qualification Level 3
