We have a new opportunity for a Senior Animal Technician to join our client’s toxicology research facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily activities of the BSU/theatre area, including assisting with anaesthesia during surgical procedures and training courses They will be required to work irregular hours in accordance with the needs of the role and be required to participate in a weekend rota and Bank Holidays (including Easter, Christmas and New Year) when requested.
Role & Responsibilities:
1. Animal Unit
§ Supervision of Junior staff ensuring a high quality of animal husbandry in accordance with ASPA 1986
§ Carrying out NACWO responsibilities in the absence of the BSU lead
§ Monitoring of animal welfare in both pre and post-regulated intervention
§ Assisting with surgical preparation and post procedures
§ Cage wash duties; cleaning out cages and pens, using of cage wash machine
§ Ensuring the cleaning of all animal areas is carried out
§ Running rodent behavioural studies
§ Maintaining GLP records and ensuring they are filled out correctly
§ Maintaining consumables and diet stock level, informing the BSU lead stock needs ordering
2. Theatres:
§ Compliance with GLP/Non-GLP for studies and general work
§ Compliance of SOPs
§ Assisting with surgical preparation and procedures
§ Anaesthesia of large and some small animals and monitoring Including induction; gas masking, intubations, I/V cannulation etc.
§ Maintaining GLP records
§ Assisting with the running of courses
§ Assisting with post-mortem examinations
§ Giving medication to animals via various routes (injection, oral, inhalation)
Essential Qualifications required:
§ Knowledge of Animals Scientific Procedures Act (1986)
§ Understand the responsibilities of the NACWO role
§ Hold IAT level 2 &3
§ Hold a Home office licence with procedural experience
§ Good communication skills
§ Great team worker and experience of supervising others
§ Good numeric and written skills (minimum GCSE grade C)
