Senior Research Technician
We are actively recruiting for a Senior Research Technician to provide high quality scientific technical support and animal care within our client’s Biological Services department. The successful candidate will lead technical teams within the unit as directed by and under the supervision of the Lead Technician and Technical Operations Manager.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As the Senior Research Technician your duties and responsibilities are summarised but not limited to:
- Responsible for the day-to-day organisation and management of staff under my supervision to ensure the effective operation of the technical team. Able to perform technical and husbandry duties of all lower grade staff if required
- Display a full understanding of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act and other relevant UK legislation to ensure and maintain compliance
- Hold a Personal Licence under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act
- Delegated day-to day responsibility for supervision and training of other technical staff to ensure the provision of skilled support to research programmes
- Responsible for the management and maintenance of complex breeding colonies to ensure genetic purity is maintained
- Perform regulated procedures on animals by the authority of my Home Office personal licence under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, to assist with academic research programmes including developing specialist areas of expertise as necessary e.g. anaesthesia, surgery etc.
- Provide advice and assistance to researchers to facilitate their research programmes
- Awareness of, and adherence to, of the University¿s and Service¿s Standard Operating procedures (SOPS) for operational and quality assurance purposes and to ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at work Act and other relevant legislation. Including drafting and implementing SOPS as required
- Responsible for the health and safety of people and areas supervised by me to ensure compliance with the relevant UK legislation
- Deputise for the Lead Technician in his/her absence as required, to ensure the continued efficient operation of the unit
- To undertake Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) and Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body (AWERB) duties as required
- Undertake CPD required to maintain technical expertise
Experience and Qualifications
The successful Senior Research Technician will have the following experience and qualifications:
- A range of relevant biological and animal technology qualifications e.g. Certificate/Associateship/Membership of the Institute of Animal Technology, HNC in Biological Sciences with Animal Technology modules etc.
- Home Office Personal Licence Holder
- Good working knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act and the roles and responsibilities of Licensees working under the Act
- Several years’ experience of working as a research support technician in an appropriate animal facility at an equivalent grade or higher
- Highly proficient in animal handling, husbandry, and breeding, for a range of species
- Proficiency in a range of technical procedures in a range of species, carried out under the personal licence
- Proficiency in anaesthesia
Salary: 28 - 35k
