Senior Scientist (Neuroimmunologist)
Bristol, South West

The Role

As a proficient cellular assay development scientist, you will be working within a diverse team, investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the immune system to neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative disease. The focus of this role will be to create studies that aid in drug discovery. This will include the design, characterisation and validation of cellular assays and the utilisation of difference ex vivo and in-vitro systems i.e ex vivo phenotypic analysis, primary murine cell culture, primary human T cell culture, human iPS-derived cell line culture and immune/ neuronal co-cultures to test the impact of therapeutics on immune regulation of neuronal cell health.

The following are responsibilities related to the Neuroimmunologist position:

  • Design and perform functional immune cell/ neuronal cultures in relevant models: primary, isolated and iPSC-derived neurons, microglia and astrocytes
  • Review and interpret study data, communicate results to clients and write final reports
  • Troubleshoot and resolve assay or technical issues in the laboratory when scientific expertise is required
  • Perform assays such as qPCR, time-lapse imaging, TR-FRET, ELISA, Luminex, WB and FACS
  • Develop novel cell biology assays as appropriate to individual drug discovery project needs
  • Ensure compliance with protocols and all applicable SOPs


The following are minimum qualifications related to the Neuroimmunologist position:

  • D. in Neuroimmunology, Immunology or related field
  • Experience in neuroimmunological aspects of neurodegenerative disease and neuroinflammation
  • Sound knowledge on the neurodegenerative disease area
  • Expert knowledge of the relevant key literature on cellular assays and cell biology
  • Hands-on experience with human and murine primary immune cell biology, and related experimental models
  • Hands-on experience with molecular and biochemical assays: microscopy, Luminex, qPCR, FACS, TR-FRET, and WB
  • Ability to analyse and interpret cell-based imaging data and identify errors
  • Capable of independently designing experiments, generating data, interpreting results and documenting work
  • Experience of leading and managing scientists to complete studies on time and on budget
